Which True View Sensor Do You Need?

Now with our release of the True View 615 and 620 RIEGL-based 3D Imaging Systems (3DIS), the question arises as to how to select the appropriate sensor. The True View 410 is the go-to workhorse sensor for 80% of project types. It features the Quanergy M8 Ultra laser scanner with a conservative range of 75 m. 

For projects that require “survey grade” accuracy and particularly low noise, the new True View 615 and True View 620 will be the sensors of choice. The True View 6XX sensor configuration is depicted in Figure 1.This 3DIS uses the new RIEGL miniVUX2 laser scanner.  The difference between the two versions of the True View 6XX systems is the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The True View 615 uses the same  positioning as a True View 410, the Applanix APX-15. The True View 620 adds a higher accuracy external IMU (the IMU-82) to the system.

The primary difference between the APX-15 and APX-20 is the accuracy of the roll, pitch and heading angles. The impact on data collection is (with the APX-20) less noise at sharp edges such as poles, edge of building and so forth. It manifests primarily as an improvement in horizontal data spread.

I’ve put together a table to give a bit of clarity to the sensor selection dilemma (see Figure 2 ). This is a work in progress that we will revise and expand over time. For now, it should give you a basic idea of which system is most suited to your primary type of work. The chart ranges in suitability from “0” meaning you can do the work with careful attention to mission planning to “+++” which is most suited to the particular task.

The release of the True View 615/620 has rounded out our choices of 3D Imaging Sensors. We now have solutions that cover a wide range of applications. One of the most useful features of all of these systems, of course, is their creation of a colorizing point cloud rather than just a LIDAR data set. These 3D point clouds are not only stunning in appearance but also reduce processing time since features are easily identifiable in the data set. 

I really think the True View product line is the most productive family of 3D data collection sensors available today. If you are in the market for a LIDAR, step up to a True View 3DIS!
